Is the Pool Heater Leaking, or Is It Condensation?
Distinguish normal heat-pump condensate from leaking pool water using timing, location, sanitizer clues, and safe observation around equipment.
Heat pumps can release substantial plain-water condensation while operating, especially in humid conditions. A plumbing leak is more likely when water continues after the unit has been off, the pool level falls, the puddle contains detectable pool sanitizer, or moisture emerges from a pressurized fitting. Keep water away from electrical components and call for service when the source is inside the cabinet.
Why a healthy heat pump can make a large puddle
The cold outdoor coil removes moisture from passing air, much like an air conditioner. That condensate drains to the base and can look alarming on a warm, humid day. Output changes with humidity, runtime, and defrost activity, so a single puddle size does not prove a leak. The manual should show intended drain openings and whether a condensate kit is available.
Use timing as the first separator
Note whether water begins only after the heat pump runs and tapers after shutdown. Condensate usually follows that operating pattern, whereas a pressurized plumbing leak may continue whenever the circulation pump runs. A gravity leak can persist even with both units off. Do not reach under energized equipment to feel for the source; observe from a dry position and record the sequence.
Compare the puddle with the pool water
With a test method approved for your sanitizer, compare a safely collected sample from the equipment drain area with the pool. Condensate should not carry the pool’s normal sanitizer residual, while leaking circulation water often does. This is a clue rather than a laboratory verdict because rain, splash-out, cleaners, and a very low sanitizer level can confuse the result.
Inspect external unions and hoses without disassembly
With equipment operated only as its manual permits, look for a bead forming at an accessible union, drain plug, hose barb, or flexible hose. Mark the edge of a puddle or place a dry absorbent sheet nearby without blocking drainage to see where moisture travels. Do not tighten hot, pressurized, cracked, or electrical-adjacent fittings; isolate the system and use qualified repair.
Check whether the pool itself is losing water
Record water level over a calm interval and compare it with evaporation under similar conditions. EPA guidance recognizes evaporation and leaks as distinct sources of pool water loss. A falling level paired with treated water at the equipment strengthens the leak case, but multiple small losses—splashing, backwashing, and evaporation—can overlap. Avoid continuous automatic refill that hides the trend.
Treat water inside the cabinet as a stop condition
Moisture emerging around wiring, controls, combustion components, refrigerant tubing, or an internal exchanger deserves professional evaluation. Turn the system off through its normal controls and approved disconnect only if safe, keep swimmers away from affected electrical equipment, and do not remove panels. Provide photos, operating timing, chemistry readings, and pool-level history to the technician.
