Evening swimming moves the goalposts
A couple who swims after work may heat during the warm afternoon but uncover when air temperature is already falling. The system must deliver enough stored gain to survive that transition. Set the target for the end of the swim, not only for the moment the cover comes off. Evening wind and humidity belong in the design assumptions.
Quantify the scale without rounding it away

A large, unshaded roof or rack can contribute meaningfully, especially alongside a cover, but hydraulic head and drainage become part of the project. Use differential control so cool collectors are bypassed.

Have an electrician evaluate panel and routing for a candidate heat pump, and a gas professional evaluate meter, tank and piping for combustion options. Put both findings beside recovery calculations. On a pool this size, hidden infrastructure can cost more effort than placing the appliance, so feasibility should eliminate bad choices before products are ordered.
Turn the cover into equipment
A large round cover needs storage, handling and inspection just like the heater. Choose a method that does not invite walking on the cover or leaning over the wall. Patch or replace damaged material according to its instructions. If regular use requires two adults, make that explicit in the operating routine rather than assuming someone else will handle it.
Know when to close the season
Log heater hours and water temperatures as autumn advances. When the unit runs almost continuously without meeting the evening target, the problem may be seasonal heat loss rather than malfunction. Set a predetermined closing threshold based on comfort, weather and safe winterization time. Extending one final week should not compromise proper draining before a freeze.
